>>>THE HOUSE (Slovakia)
We have to leave to be able to return to ourselves.
The story of “the House“ focuses on the conflict between two generations of family members living in Slovakia in the period of dramatic political, economic and social changes. It is the conflict of maturing Eva (18) on the one side and her parents on the other. The family is living in a village located in the neighborhood of a distric town somewhere in central Slovakia. The parents have experience with living in comunism. Their own family house was the only certainty they had, it was the only place where they could have felt free. Therefore, it is difficult for them to understand all the changes and new possibilities their children have.
Each character of this story has to pass through a painful change. The methaphor of the missed mutual expectations, loosing love in the family relationships and generation gap is expressed through the house, which the father builds for his daughters Eva and Jana.
Eva is a bit introvert and sensitive young girl, who lives in an everyday routine. Her daily program consists of the boring hours spent at the school, some free time activities controlled by her parents and forced visits of the church where she has to play the organ. She dreams to escape to England as an au-pair. She is fed up with the father, who puts all his energy in the building of the house. Due to his religious orientation he was not allowed to become an architect, so his life is full of disapointments. Moreover, by getting older, he is afraid of being left alone. He tries to keep the family together. There is another reason why he protects Eva from every possible danger – bad experience with the older daughter Jana, who got married in a very young age.
Eva used to rebel against the father by dating her English teacher Jacob, who was, however, already married. After Jacob broke the relationship with her, she has to return home. Only this experience, full of bitterness and disappointment, allows her to become an adult and to understand her father’s behavior. Finally she recognizes for the father the house is the only way to express his love to his daughters.
