Writer, director. Born in Padua he got involved in cinema as director of the University Cinema Center. After moving to Rome in 1986 he wrote his first screenplay
Hotel Colonial an Italian/American co-production starring Robert Duvall, John Savage, Rachel Ward and Massimo Troisi. He started his collaboration with Gabriele Salvatores writing four scripts:
Kamikazen,
Marrakech Express,
Mediterraneo (1992 Oscar as Best Foreign Film) and
Puerto Escondido. As writer he worked with the most interesting directors of the New Italian Cinema: Mazzacurati, Piccioni, D'Alatri, Sciarra and Cristina Comencini. He also wrote
Dispara! directed by Spanish director Carlos Saura. He became director in 1994 with
The True Life of Antonio H. Later he directed
Outlaw!, El Alamein – the line of fire and in 2004
The tunnel of freedom.
